Why do you need my NU ID or UNL Libraries library card number?

Only customers in good standing with a valid NU ID card or UNL Libraries library card are eligible for document delivery and Interlibrary Loan service. Your ID number, located in the lower left corner of your N-Card, allows us to verify your status with the University and your standing with the Libraries.

For more information about the NU ID card and related policies go to http://ncard.unl.edu/.

What if I forget my password?
In the event that you forget your password, please contact the UNL Libraries User Services - Interlibrary Loan Office at (402) 472-2522. We can reset your password allowing you access to ILLiad.
Where do I pick up the material?
When material is ready for your use, library staff will email you telling you where to pick up the material. UNL books and ILL returnable materials will be held at the Circulation Desk of your choice, as designated by your request. Please be prepared to pay charges at this time. Materials can only be picked up with a NU ID card or UNL Libraries library card by the requesting individual and/or their Authorized user. For information regarding the authorization of proxies, please see "Can someone pick up materials for me?"
Can someone pick up materials for me?
What is the "Authorized User"?
All UNL Faculty members, Corporate accounts, and people with disabilities can designate up to 5 others to pickup their materials by listing them as an "Authorized User" in their ILLiad profile and registering them as an Authorized User with Circulation: http://libraries.unl.edu/authorizeduser. All authorized users must have a current UNL Libraries record. Faculty can register authorized users on-line using the Authorized Users Registration Form (for Faculty). Corporate account holders can register authorized users on-line using the Authorized Users Registration Form (for Corporate Users).

All authorized users and proxies are required to present their NU ID card or UNL Libraries library card to library staff when picking up materials. The requesting patron retains responsibility for all materials obtained via document retrieval and Interlibrary Loan.
The book/journal I need is held at a different UNL Library. How can I get it?
How do I get material from the LDRF storage facility?
As you search for materials in the catalog, you will see a [webbridge icon] WebBridge icon on the screen. Upon identifying what you need, select the WebBridge button, select Request Delivery, log in to ILLiad and complete the form.

Only circulating materials are available through this service; non-circulating audio collections and reference materials are available for on site use at the holding location.
The UNL Libraries don't own the item I need. How do I get it?
The book/journal I need isn't on the shelf/is damaged. How do I get it?
Interlibrary Loan specializes in obtaining materials from other libraries. This includes items owned by UNL but in use, whether they're checked out to other users or in use by library staff for binding or repairs. In addition to books and copies of articles, Interlibrary Loan may be able to borrow microfilm reels, dissertations and other items.

When requesting these materials, please note on the form if the book is damaged, that the pages needed are missing, or that it's simply not on the shelf.

May I request an article?
UNL Faculty, Staff and students are eligible to receive copies from books and journals in the UNL collection. If the requested item is more than !!!45!!! pages, the book or journal volume will be loaned instead.

All local UNL Libraries customers in good standing, students and local community users, can request that circulating journal volumes be shipped between branches.

All valid ILL customers can request articles from material not available at the UNL Libraries, but we are restricted as to what can be obtained by copyright law. You can read the copyright information at the First Time Users page.
My citation isn't complete. May I still request it?
Many citation styles don't include all the publishing information. The more information you can provide about the citation the easier it will be for us to locate. If you are unable to supply the minimum citation information asked for, UNL Libraries staff at any of the branch libraries or at the Reference/Information Desk in Love Library can help you locate complete information. If the complete information is not available, please stop by the ILL office, 104 Love Library and bring a copy of your citation.
Are some things more difficult to get?
All libraries have certain materials they prefer not to loan. Items that usually won't be loaned include entire issues of current year magazines, journals or other serials, items in the reserve collection, reference books, genealogy, archive materials, electronic files and paper newspapers. Many libraries also choose not to loan rare or fragile materials, and some libraries will not loan dissertations, master's theses or audio-visual materials. Often it depends on which libraries own the material.

If you're requesting non-published or archival materials, please obtain complete information and permission from appropriate parties in advance. When appropriate, please obtain a copy estimate and fill out a copy form for these materials.

Recently published materials can be difficult to obtain because libraries may not have purchased and/or cataloged them yet. Interlibrary Loan is now able to purchase some of these materials. These books are then added to the collection for general circulation. For additional information, contact the ILL office.

How much time does it take?
Material from the UNL collection should be available within one - two business days. You can request up to 40 items per day, but some items may take longer than 48 hours to get. If you request more than 40 items per day, library staff will process as many requests as quickly as possible.

Items from outside the UNL collection will take more time. On average, ILL can obtain books in less than two weeks, but may only take a few days. Articles typically arrive in less than a week. Turnaround time depends on the nature of the material, e.g. the current popularity of the item, the number of libraries who own the item and who owns it. For example, articles from a common journal are faster to obtain than items published overseas or unpublished technical reports. Rare or obscure items may take 6 to 12 weeks to obtain.

If we're unable to obtain the material within 2 months, you will be contacted by the ILL staff to see if you still need the item. If you need the material by a particular date, please provide a date after which you can no longer use the material. "As Soon as Possible" is not a valid deadline. If your deadline cannot be met, you will be contacted with an explanatory note. All requests are sent out in the order received, as soon as possible, usually within 24 hours.

In emergency situations, some materials can be obtained within 1 to 2 days. Contact the ILL staff at 104 Love Library, 402-472-2522, for more information.
Will it cost me anything?
Items obtained from other UNL Libraries carry no fees. The majority of items obtained from outside the UNL Libraries are free, but sometimes they carry lender or royalty fees. On the request form you can indicate how much you are willing to pay for the material. We start with the least expensive options and work our way up to what you are willing to pay. If we can't obtain the item, we will contact you with a cost estimate for the material. Fees may range from $10 to $50 per request. Libraries are more likely to charge for copies than loans. Copies may also carry a copyright royalty dependent upon the title, year of publication and popularity.

Non-University of Nebraska community users are charged an additional $10.00 service fee for items obtained from outside the UNL system.

You are responsible for any fees assessed on materials that arrive by your stated deadline date, even if you do not use the material.
How do I find out if the material is here?
Will I be notified if there's a problem with my request?
We will notify you via email if there is a change in the status of your request. Thus, if your item is available for pick up, we can't order it because of a problem, or we are able/unable to renew your loan, we will send you an email with this information. You can also contact us via email at ill1@.unl.edu.

You can also monitor your requests from ILLiad's Main Menu. See "How do I do a status check?"

How do I do a status check?
How do I change information on a request?
I need to cancel a request. Can I do that?
Log in to the ILLiad system and go to the Review Request section of the main menu. Requests are divided into 7 sections.
  • View/ Outstanding Requests - These items are currently on order or awaiting processing by library staff. These requests can be changed or cancelled unless they have been ordered from another library or have arrived.
  • View/ Electronically Received Articles - Articles obtained via document retrieval and ILL can be viewed and downloaded from here.
  • View/ Checked Out Items - All items currently checked out to you via ILL are listed here. You can check due dates and renew materials from this list. Items checked out from the UNL collection cannot be viewed here. Those Items can be viewed/renewed via UNL Circulation at My Library Record.
  • View/ Cancelled Requests - Items that could not be filled by UNL's ILL service. If the ILL staff contacts you requesting authorization for a charge or seeking additional citation information, the request can be accessed and edited from here.
  • View/ History Requests - Items successfully completed by the ILL service are listed here.
  • View/ All Requests - Lists all requests submitted through ILLiad, filled, unfilled and outstanding.
  • View/ Notifications - Lists all notices sent to you regarding your requests.
You can also contact the Interlibrary Loan office at 402-472-2522 or ill1@unl.edu.
My request says it was "sent". What does that mean?
When a request has been forwarded to a library, its status is "Request Sent" and we are waiting to receive the material. When the item arrives and is available for pickup, the status will change to "Awaiting Customer Contact" or "Customer Notified via E-Mail".
What is electronic delivery/E-Delivery?
Articles are delivered electronically, unless the source material would be damaged by the scanning process. You can access your electronically delivered materials from ILLiad's Main Menu via the ILLiad Logon page

How long will I get to use the material from Interlibrary Loan?
Each lending library determines how long a loan may be kept, whether it can be renewed, whether photocopies may be made, and whether the loaned material may be removed from the UNL library buildings. The typical loan period is 3 weeks, limited copying may be permitted under U.S Copyright Law, and most materials may be taken from the building. Any restrictions will be listed on the front of the material.

It is important that you abide by and respect the restrictions placed by the other library including due dates. If the other library believes that our library has not handled its material with care, or if we do not return the material promptly, it may refuse to loan the UNL Libraries material in the future.
Can I ask for a renewal?
Are there overdue fines for ILL?
UNL materials can be renewed at any UNL Circulation desk or via My Library Record.

Renewals for non-UNL items must be requested before the due date. Fines for overdue materials are $1 per business day. After 2 weeks you will be charged a $10 fine plus $150 lost book fine. The lost book fine may be adjusted upward if the lending library charges more. A fine of $2 or more will block access to UNL Libraries services, including ILL. For more information see the Circulation Policies (http://libraries.unl.edu/circulation)link.

Failure to return ILL materials may result in a loss of borrowing privileges for the UNL Libraries.
Where do I return the material?
Materials can be returned to any UNL branch library, but it's preferred that all ILL loans be returned to the Interlibrary Loan Office in Love, Love South Circulation or the C.Y. Thompson Circulation Desk. You are responsible for ensuring that ILL material is returned to the ILL office, regardless of where it is returned. Please DO NOT return Interlibrary Loan books in the UNL Libraries' book drops.

Please DO NOT remove any paperwork from the material. This increases the chance that the material will become lost and that you will be charged for the material.
What Web browser should I use? Can I use my handheld device?
Most browsers are able to handle ILLiad. If you are using Firefox, you may need to accept the security certificate associated with ILLiad. Your handheld device may allow you to open ILLiad and browse your requests.
